Next week fans will be able to see Jared Leto take on the iconic role of the Joker in Suicide Squad. Leto has already brought a very different look and tone to the character, as seen in the trailers, but the comparison to that of Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight are inevitable.
During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Leto opened up about Ledger’s performance.
“Heath did an impeccable, perfect performance as the Joker. It’s one of the best performances ever in cinema. I had met Heath before. I didn’t know him well, but he was a beautiful person.”
The Joker has been played by a variety of actors including Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill (most recently in Batman: The Killing Joke) and Caesar Romero. Leto appears to have taken the role and made it his own while respecting the actors of the past.
It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
Starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Karen Fukuhara, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne, Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5, 2016.
