Warner Bros. Sets Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Movie For Fall 2019

Joker Joaquin Phoenix Todd PhillipsJoaquin Phoenix is teaming up with Todd Phillips to tell the Joker’s origin tale in a standalone feature that is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2019, Warner Bros. officially announced on Wednesday.

This new Joker project is said to have a budget of $55 million, a figure that’s much smaller than most of today’s comic book movies. Warner Bros. is looking to begin production this September.

The studio is looking to tap into Scorsese classics such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, with the film set in a gritty and grounded 1980s Gotham City. Phillips is attached to direct the standalone piece, which is said to be separate from the DC Extended Universe in an effort to create new and unique storylines to expand the canon.

In addition to directing, Phillips is also writing the script with Scott Silver, the man behind the 2002 drama film 8 Mile starring Eminem. Here’s how the the studio is describing the project:

“Under the direction of Todd Phillips, the film centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of a man disregarded by society is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

The Joker movie is expected to remain separate from the main cinematic universe, but Warner Bros. has quite a few other DC projects on the horizon. Aquaman is up first, hitting theaters on December 21, 2018, followed by Shazam! on April 5, 2019. There’s also Wonder Woman 1984, which is slated for a November 1, 2019 release. The studio’s San Diego Comic-Con panel takes place this Saturday.
