For Joker, Warner Bros. is drawing from Martin Scorsese classics such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, with the upcoming standalone film starring Joaquin Phoenix taking place in a gritty 1980s Gotham. Todd Phillips (The Hangover) directed the film, which will take place outside of the current DC cinematic universe in an attempt to create new storylines and expand on DC canon.
Todd Phillips wrote the Joker movie script with Scott Silver (8 Mile). It’s said to focus on Joaquin Phoenix’s Clown Prince of Crime as a failed 1980s comedian who becomes The Joker after bombing with audiences.
Joker is set to premiere at the Venice International Film Festival ahead of its U.S. debut in Toronto. The highly-anticipated movie opens in theaters nationwide this October.
Warner Bros. and DC are also working on several other projects, including The Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern Corps, The Suicide Squad, Aquaman 2, The Trench, Black Adam, the Shazam! sequel, Supergirl, Plastic Man and New Gods. Birds of Prey is up next, hitting theaters on February 7, 2020.
Here’s the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:
“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker opens on October 4, 2019. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on Tom Hiddleston, Loki, Joaquin Phoenix, Joker and the future of the DC Extended Universe!
