Earlier today, ABC President Channing Dungey gave new updates on the mystery Marvel TV show from American Crime creator John Ridley, as the Television Critics Association is currently going on. IGN then spoke with Ridley and got new updates out of him on what this mysterious show that is reportedly about “reinventing an existing Marvel superhero character or property”.
During the interview, Ridley teased that the mystery show is going to be something that covers a new territory of the Marvel Universe. He also cleared up with what Dungey had said earlier regarding him doing re-writes on the script as it wasn’t because “anything didn’t work the first time around.”
“It is a space that is not currently being filled. The take we’re working on is exceptionally unique. I am excited to do it because it is very different from American Crime, from Guerilla, from these things that live in a very real space. I hope the show is grounded, but I do hope it’s fantastic.”
A lot of people have been wondering what has been taking so long with the project which was announced back in April 2015. Ridley talked about that it’s important to be patient. He wants to be able to give this show the focus it deserves and produce something that can stand out from other shows in this genre.
“For me, it’s always about bring perspectives that we’re not witnessing. It’s always about a level of storytelling, patience in storytelling. We’re still making sure that when we can produce it, that I can give it my absolute full attention, because I do have a lot of things that are going on right now. Timing is everything. It’s not like it’s about being better than somebody else or doing something opposite of them just for the sake of being opposite, but even if this were the only project that were existing, is it representative? Is it unique in and of itself in where it lands in television, and is it something that I can stay with over the long haul? That’s what’s what I want to make sure that we can do.”
The Marvel TV line-up on ABC currently consist of the long-running series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that Dungey is very bullish on for a Season 5 pick-up. For the 2017-2018 TV season, The Inhumans will be joining ABC as the eight-episode series is set to premiere on Tuesday, September 26.
