Following the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez has called out “sexist” rumors of a romantic relationship between herself and the actor.

Johnny Depp emerged victorious from the trial with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, with the jury finding Heard had committed defamation on all three counts Depp’s legal team brought against her. Depp was found to be liable for defamation on just one of the three counts Heard’s legal team had raised against him and his lawyers.

Over the course of the highly publicized trial, rumors emerged surrounding Johnny Depp and Camille Vasquez, one of his lawyers, alleging the pair were engaged in a romantic relationship. Vasquez has now spoken out against these rumors.

‘An Unethical Charge’

As online spectators scrutinized and studied every conceivable scrap of information to come out of the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial, some eyes were drawn to interactions between Depp and Camille Vasquez, spawning speculative stories that the two had become involved in a romantic affair.

According to People, a source close to the trial dismissed these stories back in May, saying the rumors were “entirely, 100 percent, unequivocally untrue.” Speaking to People herself, Camille Vasquez, who has a boyfriend, addressed the rumors directly and called out the sexism in such speculation, saying:

“I guess it comes with the territory of being a woman just doing her job… It’s disappointing that certain outlets kind of ran with it or said that my interactions with Johnny — who is a friend and I’ve known and represented for four-and-a-half years now — that my interactions in any way were inappropriate or unprofessional. That’s disappointing to hear.

“I care very deeply about my clients, and we have obviously become close. But when I say we, I mean the entire team, and of course that includes Johnny. And, I’m Cuban and Colombian. I’m tactile. What do you want me to say? I hug everyone. And I’m not ashamed about that…

“[Johnny Depp] was fighting for his life and it broke my heart to see him day in and day out have to sit there and listen to the most horrific allegations being made against him. And if I could provide any bit of comfort, then of course I would do that, whether it’s holding his hand or letting him know that we were there and we were going to fight for him because he deserved it.”

Camille Vasquez said she is “very happy in my relationship,” emphasizing it’s “unethical for us to date our clients.” She went on to say “It’s also an unethical charge being made. It’s sexist. It’s unfortunate and it’s disappointing, but at the same time it kind of comes with the territory. I can’t say I was all that surprised.”

The defamation trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp was broadcast live on Court TV. The trial was also being live-streamed on Court TV’s website, though it was not available on any other online or streaming platforms.
