In the same report which revealed that an origin movie centered on Batman’s arch nemesis The Joker was in development from director/co-writer Todd Phillips (The Hangover Trilogy), co-writer Scott Silver (8 Mile) and producer Martin Scorsese, Deadline also confirmed that Jared Leto will be reprising his role as the Clown Prince of Crime for Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens.
According to the trade, the new Joker origin story will be under a new banner in the DC Extended Universe where Warner Bros. will “expand the canon of DC properties and create unique story lines with different actors playing the iconic characters”. While it certainly sounds possible that we may see a different actor playing Joker in the origin film, we at least know now that Leto’s portrayal of the character will also continue on in other future DCEU films. Here’s to hoping that Joker will be the central antagonist in Suicide Squad 2, as he should have been in the first one.
With the announcement of yet another villain-centric film in the DCEU, the question now, though, is Warner Bros. focusing too much attention on the bad guys of their universe rather than taking the time to fully develop their superhero characters? With the first Suicide Squad, its sequel, David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens, talks of a Black Adam solo movie starring Dwayne Johnson, and now this Joker origin story, that will be five villain-centric film when, at this point, we still haven’t seen solo movies for heroes like Aquaman, The Flash, Cyborg, Shazam, Green Lantern or even a solo Batman movie yet, though they are all in various stages of development. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.
While it’s still uncertain who will be returning for the sequel, the first Suicide Squad film starred Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Cara Delevingne as June Moone/Enchantress, Jared Leto as The Joker and Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Gotham City Sirens will star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. Catwoman and Poison Ivy are also expected to appear.
No release dates have been set for Suicide Squad 2 or Gotham City Sirens.
