Joseph Gordon-Levitt Talks ‘Sandman’

At the Spike TV Guys Choice Awards, Joseph Gordon-Levitt spoke to MTV about the production of Sandman. Levitt stated that production was

Slow but steady, It’s a really complicated adaptation because those comics, they’re brilliant. But they’re not written as a whole.

Things have very been quiet on the development of the live action adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman up until now. Gordon-Levitt gave MTV a few tidbits on what to expect from the film, stating that while there won’t be much punching, audiences can expect “a grand, spectacular action film.”

The Sandman series had a 75 issue run throughout the 80’s and 90’s as well as two graphic novels (The Dream Hunters and Endless Nights). It seems as though they’re looking to take elements from the whole series and make it into a singular film as Gordon-Levitt says

It’s not like Watchmen, which is a graphic novel that has a beginning, middle and end, to try and take the entire Sandman series and make it into something that’s a feature film a movie that has a beginning, middle and end is complicated.

And If you’re hoping that Sandman won’t be like other big budget comic book features you’re in luck. Gordon-Levitt promises that Sandman won’t stray away from key element of the Morpheus character stating that

Big spectacular action movies are generally about, like, crime fighters fighting crime and blowing shit up. This has nothing to do with that, it was actually one of the things that Neil Gaiman said to me, he said ‘Don’t have him punch anything.’ Because he never does. If you read the comics, Morpheus doesn’t punch anybody. That’s not what he does. And so, it’s going to be like a grand, spectacular action film, but that relies on none of those same old ordinary cliches.

All those reasons are exactly why production hasn’t been moving as swiftly as you would like. I’m looking forward to exploring the world of Sandman. We can all appreciate that the production team is taking its time to give us a great movie!
