In the latest events of the AT&T and Time Warner merger, the Justice Department has filed an appeal to halt the major business move from taking place.
Following the announcement of the major union of Time Warner and AT&T the Justice Department had previously expressed its concerns with the major merger saying it would make the market, “less competitive and less innovative.” Well, it seems like they are pushing forward by appealing.
AT&T General Counsel David McAtee notes his surprise to the news by saying:
“The Court’s decision could hardly have been more thorough, fact-based, and well-reasoned. While the losing party in litigation always has the right to appeal if it wishes, we are surprised that the DOJ has chosen to do so under these circumstances,” McAtee said in a statement. “We are ready to defend the Court’s decision at the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.”
The document itself is over 200 pages and argues that the merger would significantly decrease competition. It’s a very interesting and unexpected outcome but one to keep a watchful eye on going forward.
