Aquaman actor Jason Momoa has revealed that his character’s design in Justice League is the result of a collaborative process – director Zack Snyder and the crew came up with a lot of the design while Momoa offered his own suggestion.
In a new interview with DC All Access, Momoa explained that several of the character design elements that were discussed were not brought up with Aquaman’s armor, but rather what the character was like outside of his costume:
“Zack [Snyder] had the idea to put the tattoos everywhere and everyone wanted him to have a little bit of blonde in the hair. I just wanted him to have the Van Gogh green-colored eyes, where you can kind of get lost in them. You’re scared by it, but you’re drawn in. We put the contacts in, and I was like, wow. It’s kind of scary, but hopefully not too scary.”
The contacts are an interesting addition if Momoa’s intent is to help demonstrate that his superhero is half-Atlantean – and might be helpful as a way of establishing how the character is initially distant from the idea of superheroics due to being different, at least until things get real.
Justice League unites on November 17, 2017. The superhero epic features a cast that includes Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne (Batman), Henry Cavill as Kal-El/Clark Kent (Superman), Gal Gadot as Diana Prince (Wonder Woman), Jason Momoa as Orin/Arthur Curry (Aquaman), Ezra Miller as Barry Allen (The Flash), Ray Fisher as Victor Stone (Cyborg), Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope, J. K. Simmons as Commissioner James ‘Jim’ Gordon, Joe Morton as Dr. Silas Stone, Amber Heard as Mera, Billy Crudup as Dr. Henry Allen, and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West. Julian Lewis Jones and Michael McElhatton are also in the movie in unspecified roles.
Aquaman will make a splash on December 21, 2018.
