Karen Gillan Talks ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ & ‘Doctor Who’

Karen Gillan Guardians Of The Galaxy Doctor WhoDoctor Who’s Karen Gillan entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2014 as the villainous Nebula, the adopted daughter of Thanos, in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The first film featured Nebula’s struggle with her stepsister Gamora (Zoe Saldana). In a new interview with The Wrap, Gillan spoke about what she is looking forward for Guardians fans to see, including a deeper exploration of her relationship with Gamora in the sequel.

“What I love about the second movie for Nebula in particular is that we get — We know that she’s a pretty angry woman with some daddy issues. [But] in the second movie, we’re going to start to see how much pain her father actually caused her, and we’re going to delve right into the relationship with her sister Gamora.”

Gillan also said that audience members might even find themselves feeling sympathetic for the Nebula character. She teases how the sequel really goes into the emotional side of her character, which was something that Gillan was happy that she got to do for this second go at Nebula.

“I think we might even feel a tinge of sympathy towards Nebula this time, because we really start to see the emotional crack in her character. I was just allowed to completely explore that and take it to a completely different dimension with her. I was really happy about that.”

If you were at San Diego Comic-Con back in 2013, you might recall the hilarious moment when Gillan revealed that she had shaved her head for the Nebula part. The Wrap asked her if she had shaved her head again for the second Guardians installment.

“I shaved half of my head this time, but they took away the butt, like the underneath-half of my hair, and then left the top part. That was the best gift ever.”

While she is known to Marvel fans as Nebula, in the Doctor Who Universe she is better known for her role as the 11th Doctor’s companion Amy Pond who exited the series in the middle of Season 7 after an encounter with the Weeping Angels. When asked if the actress would ever consider appearing on the beloved BBC series again, Gillan spoke about being game for it while also praising the upcoming companion in Pearl Mackie who will be debuting in Series 10 as Bill Potts.

“If they ask me, I would be back there in a shot, but I think I’m more excited about seeing Pearl take over as companion, because she was amazing.”

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, starring Chris Pratt as Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Glenn Close as Irani Rael, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Chris Sullivan as Taserface and Kurt Russell as Ego, opens in theaters on Friday, May 5.
