Over the last few years, Karl Urban has slowly become a fan-favorite performer within genre films. He successfully took over the role of Dr. Leonard H. “Bones” McCoy in the newly rebooted Star Trek films, helped bring back Judge Dredd to life in 2012’s Dredd and is now playing Skurge in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok.
Urban’s role as Bones is definitely the performances he is most recognized for, especially given the fact that he was stepping in the footsteps of DeForest Kelley. Urban keeps Kelley’s spirit alive in Bones, but also manages to find a charm that is distinctively his own as an actor.
In Star Trek Beyond, Urban was one of the shining elements of the film – particularly in the scenes he exclusively shares with Zachary Quinto’s Spock.
With a fourth film still in development but not yet given the greenlight, fans have been wondering where the cinematic future of the franchise is headed after the disappointing box office returns of Star Trek Beyond.
Speaking to Screen Crush, Urban reveals that he has no idea what is going on with Star Trek 4:
“You know as much as I do, my friend. Listen, we’d all love to make another Star Trek movie. That’s absolutely certain. But if we don’t get that opportunity then I’m really happy to have ended on such a good note. We had such a wonderful time shooting Star Trek Beyond. It was an amazing experience — and we’re all still grieving over the fact that it was the last time that we got to shoot with Anton [Yelchin]. We’re all like a family. It won’t be the same without him.”
Anton Yelchin (Pavel Chekov) died last year at the age of 27 – just a month before the release of Star Trek Beyond. The film was subsequently dedicated to him as well as the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy. J.J. Abrams previously announced that Chekov would not be recast for Star Trek 4.
Currently, the status of Star Trek 4 remains in question. Hopefully, Paramount is able to get it off the ground especially since the proposed premise of bringing back Chris Hemsworth as Captain Kirk’s father would be quite exciting.
Karl Urban will next be seen as Skurge in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, which opens in theaters on November 3, 2017.
