Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that Ewan McGregor’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi show will be a limited Star Wars series on Disney Plus.

Since the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm, many projects for the Star Wars franchise have been started up, canceled, and/or reworked into something else. At one point many of the proposed projects in the works was a solo film focusing around Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi.  Following the disappointing box office results of Solo: A Star Wars Story, many such projects were canceled and/or reworked into a Disney Plus project which has included this series.

Despite rumors that the project had been canceled and other behind the scenes production problems, the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus series is still happening. The upcoming show had been said to be a limited series for some time which has now been confirmed by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. While speaking to The Wrap, Kennedy remained coy about the future of the movie franchise but  praised the people who were behind the upcoming Disney Plus show:

“It’s been very exciting to see the talent that’s come in. And we’re now developing the limited Obi-Wan Kenobi series with Deborah Chow, and she’s just been doing a phenomenal job.”

Directed by Deborah Chow from scripts written by Hossein Amini, Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series is just one of three officially announced Star Wars shows for Disney Plus. The Mandalorian debuted on the streaming service this past November with stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog, and Nick Nolte. The series was written by Jon Favreau, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist is also on board as a co-executive producer.

An untitled Rogue One prequel centered on Cassian Andor is also in development with Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk reprising their respective roles. The Americans producer Stephen Schiff serves as showrunner and the series is expected to begin filming this year.
