Kevin Feige Discusses Cumberbatch Casting and The Dark Dimension

We’re still several months away from Marvel’s Doctor Strange, but it’s always exciting when Kevin Feige speaks about the film. In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Feige talked about the excitement of having cast Benedict Cumberbatch. He also went on to confirm we would see glimpses of the Dark Dimension.

Cumberbatch’s recent stand-out performances in Sherlock and The Imitation Game only enforced what we’ve already known- he is an actor with incredible range and an unmatched gravitas. Both of these characteristics will be essential in tackling the challenging role of Dr. Stephan Strange. When explaining the first meeting to discuss the project with Cumberbatch, Feige had this to say:

“After [Benedict] left, [executive producer] Stephen Broussard and I looked at each other and said, ‘I think Doctor Strange was just here.”

The producer described Stephan Strange as “an arrogant neurosurgeon in Manhattan, living a very opulent lifestyle.” Feige continued on to explain the Sorcerer’s origin story and what makes Cumberbatch a perfect fit for the role.

“He gets into a horrible car accident and his hands, the tools by which he can do amazing surgeries, are mangled and destroyed. That starts his downward path, and that’s why Benedict is such a great choice – you can go to the highest heights and lowest lows with him and he won’t lose you.”

Aside from Benedict’s acting chops, Feige also confirmed we would get an interesting look into other realms, most notably the Dark Dimension. He was also adamant about sticking to the source material.

“But if you were to open a Doctor Strange comic drawn by Steve Ditko, you would see the Dark Dimension is, in fact, very colorful in an extremely psychedelic way. Those are the things we’re not shying away from.”

Everything seems to be shaping up perfectly. The casting is on point, the costume is beautifully regal, and Feige’s confidence in the film gives us reason to beleive Doctor Strange could be one of the best superhero films of 2016.
