Kevin Feige Says Marvel Could Run ‘Star Wars Celebration’ Style Event

Marvel Studios Kevin Feige Comic-Con Celebration EventFans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be familiar with Marvel’s regular presence in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, hosting huge panels to unveil upcoming movies, announce new cast members and take questions from fans. Recent Hall H panels have seen Brie Larson announced as the star of 2019’s Captain Marvel, premiered footage from various films including Thor: Ragnarok and Spider-Man: Homecoming, and shown off logos and concept art from movies still in production. But it sounds like Kevin Feige has been thinking of turning Marvel’s panels at events like Comic-Con and D23 into something bigger.

Speaking recently to Fandango, Feige revealed that there had been discussions within Marvel Studios about seceding from Comic-Con to host their own equivalent. He explained how Marvel may follow the example set by Star Wars Celebration events:

“Over the years there have been discussions about that. I think what we try to do occasionally in San Diego we’re very proud of and think is a fun tradition. That being said, I think [Star Wars] Celebration is pretty amazing. I’ve been to a few Celebrations and the idea of doing something like that … I think we have enough content, and enough fans, and enough ideas that we could easily do something like that, I’m just not sure where or when.”

Feige’s not wrong when he says the MCU is big enough to justify a Marvel convention. Thor: Ragnarok will mark Marvel Studios’ 17th release and a further five films (Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, and the currently untitled fourth Avengers movie) are currently in production and slated for release over the next two years.

Star Wars Celebration is a vast Star Wars fan event, operating on a similar scale to Comic-Con. Celebration is not an annual event, a model Feige may well want Marvel to follow, meaning a large event could be held every few years to announce each new phase of the MCU. However, it seems more likely that Marvel would be looking to host an event on an annual – or almost annual – basis, given that the studio tends to release at least two new films every year.
