UPDATE: io9 contacted Lucasfilm and confirmed that the quote wasn’t translated correctly, with a rep saying: “[Kennedy] said it’s something she’d like to do one day in the future.”
Here’s the correct quote from Kathleen Kennedy:
“We would love to tell a story about Lando Calrissian one day, but it’s not relevant, it would be fun to tell the story of Han and Chewie …”
The original story follows…
Solo doesn’t hit theaters for another week, but the next Star Wars spin-off may have already been revealed. Forget about Obi-Wan Kenobi, though — Lucasfilm wants Lando Calrissian to be the focus of the next one.
Speaking with Premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed the studio’s plans for a Lando Calrissian movie. Here’s what she told the site:
“We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian. Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca but Lando will be next.”
Billy Dee Williams originated the character of Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, but he’s set to make his big screen return in Solo, played by Donald Glover. Reviews for Solo are already praising Glover’s Lando as a scene-stealer, so it’s not a surprise that Lucasfilm is giving him his own movie.
Star Wars fans can catch Glover’s Lando in Solo when it opens next week. Directed by Ron Howard, Solo is the second Star Wars spin-off following Rogue One. The film dials back the clock to chronicle Han Solo during the early years of his life as he proves himself as a criminal and meets Chewbacca.
Written by Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon, Solo: A Star Wars Story also stars Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo, Paul Bettany and Ian Kenny. Here’s the synopsis:
Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.
Solo: A Star Wars Story arrιves in theaters May 25, 2018.
5 Reasons To Be Excited (And 5 Reasons To Worry) About ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’
It’s been roughly five months since The Last Jedi came out, which means it’s time for another Star Wars movie! The second anthology film that explores the Star Wars universe’s past, Solo follows a young Han Solo as he becomes a smuggler. Before he had the Millennium Falcon or considered Luke Skywalker one of his best friends, Han was still talking and blasting his away across the galaxy.
A new Star Wars film is typically a cause for celebration, but there’s something different about Solo. The posters and print material all look fun and stylized, but the actual trailer looks gray and unsatisfying. There are a lot of things propping this movie up, mainly that it is about Han Solo, arguably the most popular character in the entire franchise, but there are also a lot of things dragging it down. Hopefully Solo will kick butt, but without Harrison Ford at the center of the action, it’s hard to say!
