‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’: Daisy Ridley On The Difficulties Of Lightsaber Use

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Being a Jedi is hard…

During a recent interview with Vogue, Star Wars: The Last Jedi star Daisy Ridley revealed how difficult it is to properly wield a lightsaber. The actress stated:

“They’re really heavy. Three, four, five kilos? And the weight’s very unevenly distributed.”

Ridley went on to describe her preparation for her lightsaber fight scenes:

“You do, like, eight thwacks one way, eight the other, eight up, eight down.”

The actress joked that it is a great way to stay in shape and that she should offer up a “Lightsaber School” training regimen. She definitely looked great in her climactic lightsaber battle with Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens. I am really excited to see how her skills have improved for The Last Jedi.

Ridley, however, did not reveal whether or not she found it difficult to refrain from making the iconic lightsaber humming sound with her mouth when she was brandishing it, which other former Star Wars actors, like Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, have spoken about being an issue for them in the past.

The next chapter in the Star Wars saga will be Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the film stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Domhnall Gleeson as General Armitage Hux, Benicio Del Toro as “DJ,” Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO and Jimmy Vee as R2-D2.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15, 2017.
