When the Legends of Tomorrow joined the superhero team-up during the Invasion crossover event, Dr. Martin Stein discovered that he now had a daughter named Lily, born out his efforts to convince his younger self to focus on family. Adamantly against altering the course of time, Dr. Stein ultimately accepted his daughter but kept her existence a secret from everyone except Jax. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Phil Klemmer discussed how the newest episode of the show will call the team’s purpose into question when they turn to Lily for assistance.
Klemmer explained that making Dr. Stein the most vocal proponent of maintaining the natural course of time was not an accident.
“We made him intentionally the biggest hardliner about the fact that they have to fix these aberrations.”
Klemmer explained how Lily’s existence will challenge the team’s purpose.
“He was the one to effectively convince Sara [Caity Lotz] not to kill Darhk [Neal McDonough] for the sake of what it would do to the timeline. We had so much fun making a hypocrite out of him, a guy who is so smart, so principled, and a guy who seems to be all brain — not that he doesn’t have a heart. We wanted to give him the daughter because it really calls into question what the purpose of our team is.”
Klemmer cited the episode where our heroes traveled to the Civil War era and wrestled with the dilemma of freeing slaves as an example of the questions the team will be asking themselves more often.
“While we’re there, are we just time janitors trying to put things back to the way they were, or do we have a chance to engineer them?”
Klemmer explained how the challenge to the team’s purpose will affect Dr. Stein.
“Moving forward, that’s what our team will struggle with. Are they just doing the job of the Time Masters that they blew up? Or are they going to do it their own way, which is like, ‘Aberrations be damned, what if we could make things better?’ For Stein, who is just so vociferously against changing anything with history, it’s giving him a daughter and forcing him to acknowledge that love.”
The debate between preserving or altering the course of history has been explored in several science-fiction works on page and screen, yet it continues to remain a popular and fascinating subject. Where do you stand on the topic? Should the Legends begin accepting and initiating the changes they make to the timeline or should Dr. Stein’s daughter be an acceptation to their rules?
