Leonardo DiCaprio On How Close He Came To Suiting Up As James Cameron’s Spider-Man

Before Sam Raimi brought Spider-Man to life on the big screen, James Cameron was actually developing a script for the project in the mid-nineties. While some of the elements of the film’s script remained for the 2002 film, Cameron’s script strayed pretty far from the source material.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was a name that was frequently linked to the project as it’s villain and the studio was even lining up Leonardo DiCaprio to star as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. But how close did that come to happening? While speaking with Empire, the actor commented on the project and suiting up as the wall-crawler for Cameron.

Not very close, but there was a screenplay. I know he was semi-serious about doing it at some point, but I don’t remember any further talks about it. We had a couple of chats. I think there was a screenplay that I read, but I don’t remember. This was 20 years ago!

DiCaprio has been eyed (and a fan-favorite) for numerous roles in comic book films over the years, even rumored to be the frontrunner to play Captain America back in 2008. Would you like to see DiCaprio pop up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? How about the DCEU? Let us know what role you’d see him fitting in the commments section below.
