Linda Hamilton is set to reprise her iconic role as Sarah Connor in the sixth installment of the Terminator franchise.
James Cameron — who is developing the project with Deadpool director Tim Miller — made the announcement Tuesday night at a special Terminator event celebrating the franchise and expressed his excitement and how meaningful he feels it will be to have Hamilton back in the mix when the franchise makes its return:
“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return. There are 50-year old, 60-year old guys out there killing bad guys but there isn’t an example of that for women.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger has also been confirmed to return for the sixth installment. The film will be a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day that will introduce new characters to pass the baton to. Miller will direct from a script written by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins), Charles Eglee (Dark Angel) and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). The trio has planned out a trilogy made up of films that can stand on their own while simultaneously forming an overarching storyline.
Plot details are still under wraps but at the private event, Cameron teased that the new film will feature a young woman as the main character with supporting characters from both the past and the future:
“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story. We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”
