Lionsgate In Negotiations To Distribute ‘Hellboy’ Reboot

Hellboy LionsgateLionsgate is officially in negotiations to distribute the upcoming Hellboy reboot starring David Harbour (Stranger Things).

According to TheWrap, an individual with knowledge of the project confirmed that the studio is in talks to distribute the reboot which currently has the working title Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen.

Based on the Dark Horse Comic created by Mike Mignola in 1993 about the demonic hero who became the world’s greatest paranormal investigator while combating occult threats for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, the reboot from Millennium Films will be directed by Neil Marshall (Game Of ThronesThe Descent) with Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin producing. Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment will also produce. Principal photography is expected to commence early as this September.

The film will have an R-rating as it will have a darker, greater emphasis on horror than its predecessors as it attempts to differentiate itself from the previous films from Guillermo del Toro and go for a tone closer to that of the original source material.

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is set to release sometime during 2018. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on Hellboy as we learn it.

I still don’t understand how this is being greenlighted so fast, but DelToros sequel was delayed for years. The one thing I heard was Mike Mignola soured on him, and thats why it’s not in his hands anymore. Just please don’t make it Underworld-ish.

    • Apparently Mignola was the holdup. The comics are very good, but too dark and depressing at times. Will be interesting to see how this one turns out.

Del Toro wanted a $200 million budget for the 3rd one. This one will cost under $60. That was the main reason, The last 2 barley broke even for the studio.
