‘Logan’ Director James Mangold On Making A “Human” Wolverine…

When the first trailer for Logan, the third installment of the Wolverine solo film series, was released fans were immediately drawn in by the somber and realistic tone of the film. Set to Johnny Cash’s melancholy rendition of the Nine Inch Nails “Hurt”, the trailer offered a more bleak and gritty world than had been seen in previous Wolverine films. Director James Mangold and star Hugh Jackman spoke with Empire about the new aesthetic and how their approach to Logan will be different than the characters previous two adventures.

James Mangold discussed why it was important to scale back on the CG spectacle for this Wolverine film.

“The goal was to make something human. We made an effort to scale back on the gloss and greenscreen.”

Star Hugh Jackman, who will be reprising his role as Wolverine for the last time, concurred with Mangold’s statement.

“It’s essential you see this as the story of a man who is struggling with mortality and legacy. Whether the world has been better off with him or without him.”

Joining the X-Men franchise is actress Dafne Keen in the role of Laura/X-23. Mangold had nothing but praise for both Jackman and Keen.

“If anyone could steal a movie from Hugh Jackman, it would be Dafne. She carries, all the time, a slight strangeness. I could never have gotten this done without Hugh. You’re going to see him doing some of the best work I’ve ever seen him do.”

The latest issue of Empire also includes a new image from the film featuring Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart. Check it out below!

Logan stars Hugh Jackman, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, and Patrick Stewart.
