Marvel has tapped Lucy Liu to direct the second season premiere of the hit Netflix series Luke Cage starring Mike Colter.
Many thought Liu was set to play a role in the series after she was spotted on set of the production in Harlem last month. The actress made her directorial debut in 2011 co-directing the short film Meena. She has also previously directed episodes of the CBS series Elementary for which she stars in, as well as an episode of USA’s Graceland.
“What a thrill to collaborate with Marvel and Netflix, two industry titans, who paint our world with inspiring stories and beguiling characters,” Liu said in a statement. “It is such an honor to work with such a passionate and fearless team.”
Head of Marvel Television and executive producer Jeph Loeb also expressed his confidence in Liu joining the series as a director:
“When you’re dealing with a bulletproof man, it helps if you have a bulletproof Director. Lucy brings a keen eye, a superb sense of story, and an obvious love of actors. She is rocking Luke Cage 2.”
The first season of Marvel’s bulletproof superhero featured a hero meant to inspire hope and the battle for Harlem’s soul. In the closing moments of season one, Luke was being carted off to prison after his true identity was revealed to the world. But it’s only a matter of time before Harlem’s hero’s innocence is proven. Luke will be seen again when the team-up series The Defenders hits Netflix next month. The series pits the street level heroes of the Netflix corner of the Marvel cinematic universe against a villainous businesswoman named Alexandra played by Sigourney Weaver.
Plot details for the second season of Luke Cage remain under wraps however, the series will feature the return of Colter along with co-stars Simone Missick and Rosario Dawson. Mustafa Shakir and Gabrielle Dennis have also been added into the mix. Cheo Hodari Coker returns to exec produce.
Luke Cage Season 2 is set to premiere sometime during 2018. All 13 episodes of the first season are available to stream on Netflix now.
