Deleted Scene From ‘Man of Steel’ Featured Jor-El Speaking Kryptonian

If you have ever wondered if there was a deleted Man of Steel scene featuring Jor-El (played by Russell Crowe) speaking fluent Kryptonese to son, Ka-El (played by Henry Cavill), wonder no more! There was! All according to linguistic anthropologist, Dr. Christine Schreyer, who developed a functioning Kryptonian language for the Zack Snyder film back in 2011.

Appearing on SuperHouse Podcast, Shreyer talked about her work on Man of Steel as well as creating Eltarian for this year’s Power Rangers film. She said that the Kryptonian came in when Jor-El was talking to Superman.

Shreyer explained how she developed the language by partially exploring a Canadian (where she is from) writing system called Cree. Calm down, Marvel Fan Boys, Cree, not Kree.

“Cree is an indigenous language from Canada. And it is slavic writing system.  so there are gemeotrical shapes. There are triangles and little half vases and rounded things and dots. And they flip depending. I had been thining aout Cree system when I got to set the very first day and that influenced how the letters how work in the Kyrptonian alphabet.”

The language contrasts with a full alphabet, in which vowels have status equal to consonants, and with an abjad, in which vowel marking is absent or optional. You can see this at play in a partial chart below:

Kyrptonian Language

Shreyer added, that the language, sadly did not make it into the final cut of the film.

“They did film a few pieces because people got really excited about it, but it was in the middle of production and they were thrown in and they didn’t really flow with everything else, so they got cut out.”

That however, did not influence whether she enjoyed the film or not.

“I didn’t really have any expectations for Man of Steel. I liked it a lot. But like many people, I feel like the battle scene at the end was a little long. Um, I really liked Batman v Superman more than I thought I would. Was not sure about Ben Affleck actually, but I did not mind him.”

Unfortunately, the deleted scene never appeared on the Man of Steel Blue-Ray.  Maybe we’ll hear Shreyer’s language at play when SyFy Channel’s Krypton premieres. You can listen to the full podcast here.
