Fans have been clamoring for an adaptation of the Planet Hulk storyline in the MCU for a long time, but so far this has been impossible due to rights issues with Hulk solo films. In Thor: Ragnarok, we might see part of that storyline come to the screen in a more elongated way.
Speaking to Collider, Mark Ruffalo talked a little bit about how Planet Hulk influenced not only Thor: Ragnarok, but also will help to define Hulk’s role in the next few films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
“This is where it starts, and it starts- it’s basically a mini version of ‘Planet Hulk.’ So the fans get that, and then we start to build out the separation between the Hulk and [Bruce] Banner. Now the Hulk can be his own character, and Banner can now start to be the person that he would be without having to be afraid of being excited all the time.”
With the two characters beginning to separate and become their own entities, Ruffalo went on to describe what exactly we can expect from Hulk when we see him in the upcoming Thor sequel:
“So we start to get to know these two characters in a way that we didn’t get to do before. A part of that is having a speaking Hulk as, like a 6-year-old boy.”
So it seems that we will get to see a great evolution on the part of the Hulk. As far as how much of that evolution we will see in Thor: Ragnarok, Ruffalo explained:
“I was called into meet with Kevin and Lou [D’Esposito, co-president] and Brad [Winderbaum, VP of production & development] months before this, and they said ‘Listen, if you were going to make a standalone Hulk movie, what would it be? What are your ideas?’ I said, I think it should be this, this, this, this, this and it should end here. And he said, ‘Great, we love that. What if we took that and we did that between Thor 3, Avengers 3, and Avengers 4? And we did that whole character arc for you, as if it was a standalone movie, and we put it those three movies?’ And I said, that would be great.”
Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Idris Elba, Karl Urban and Jeff Goldblum. You can read the synopsis for the film below:
“Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor’s quest for survival leads him in a race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela (Cate Blanchett) from destroying his home world and the Asgardian civilization.”
Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on Nov. 3.
