Mark Ruffalo Provides Update On ‘Thor: Ragnarok’; Promises Great Arc For Hulk

For years now, fans have been wanting to see another standalone Hulk movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As you probably already know, the character’s rights currently reside at Universal Studios, so that likely won’t happen anytime soon, but his supporting role in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok is the next best thing we can get for now. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Marvel Studios don’t have big plans for the Jade Giant.

While speaking with Yahoo at the Sundance Film Festival, Mark Ruffalo teased his character’s arc in the rest of Marvel’s Phase 3 movies and confirmed that he will appear in both parts of Avengers: Infinity War. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’d love to do a Hulk movie, but that’s beyond my control, it’s controlled by Universal. Marvel doesn’t even hold the rights to it. So, it’s not on the horizon. And I don’t know if it will be. But we’ve worked a really interesting arc into ‘Thor 3′, ‘Avengers 3′ and ‘4′ for Banner that I think will – when it’s all added up – will feel like a Hulk movie, a standalone movie. ”

The character last appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron, which was also Joss Whedon’s final contribution to the universe. While we didn’t know that until quite recently, it appears that the director actually told the cast that he was planning to leave after his second Avengers movie. Naturally, Ruffalo was rather disappointed, since Whedon was the one who brought him into the world of Marvel, but he’s very much looking forward to working with the Russo Brothers:

“Yeah. He basically told me it was and I was like ‘goddamn it, you dragged me in to this world and now you’re abandoning me here!’ But they’re doing fine. Joss’ll do fine. I just miss him, and I will miss him. He cracked this character, he obviously cracked the Avengers which was nearly impossible. It was a miracle and he did it so beautifully.

I think the Russo brothers are great and I think they’re well positioned to take it on, and I’m happy to be doing it with them, but I’m friends with Joss. He had a hard time making the first one and he had a hard time making this one. I think it’s partially the nature of that beast.”

Meanwhile, Thor: Ragnarok starts shooting this Summer in Australia, so director Taika Waititi and the rest of the crew behind the movie are currently hard at work on pre-production. Thankfully, Ruffalo provided an update on the current status of the threequel and from the sound of things, they’re still in very early stages.

“Taika Waititi’s coming in and I love him. That’s a surprise and it fits part of this Marvel doing the unexpected, casting the unexpected, and now bringing in the unexpected for writer and director. I’m really interested in where that’s going. They’re writing the script now. I am thinking about it, I’m doing script meetings and stuff so we’re starting to prep it.”
