Martin Campbell On What It Would Take For Him To Return To James Bond

James Bond

Martin Campbell, director of Goldeneye and Casino Royale, is not sure whether he will ever return to the world of James Bond or not, but he does know what it might take to interest him enough for a return.

While promoting his new film The Foreigner (starring Jackie Chan and former Bond Pierce Brosnan), Campbell was asked by CinemaBlend if he was interested in ever returning to direct a James Bond film, to which he replied:

“I don’t know. I might be, so never say never. I didn’t after Goldeneye. I don’t know if it was sort of arrogance or whatever, I don’t know. I just sort of said no to it. I was pretty much offered every one after that. But I just felt that I was repeated it. Another control room to blow up; another nutcase taking over the world. And also there is something refreshing about starting a new Bond, and particularly with Pierce [Brosnan]. It was sort of a Cold War sort of situation then, and we had Judi Dench for the first time. So there was a kind of excitement to doing it. Casino Royale was the same thing. Much the same reasons, actually.”

Having worked with two different Bonds in Brosnan and Daniel Craig, the director was asked if he would be interested in returning if given the opportunity to work with a new actor, to which he replied:

“Yeah. I think Daniel is terrific. He’s certainly ‘for now,’ do you know what I mean? First of all, he’s a terrific actor, but secondly he brings that sort of toughness and rough edge to Bond that is now so relevant.”

Skyfall and Spectre writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade will return to pen the script for the next Bond film. An unconfirmed rumor claims that Bond 25 will involve 007 returning from retirement to avenge the death of his wife.

Bond 25 is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on November 8, 2019.
