Marvel Announces Cast For ‘Runaways’

Runaways TV HuluLast fall, it was announced that Hulu and Marvel Television were working on bringing The Runaways to life, telling the story of six super-powered teenagers that have to fight their own flesh and blood as the parents are the villains of the show. While we haven’t heard much on that project lately, other than that it is reportedly starting production in February in Los Angeles, we finally have some casting news!

Today Marvel announced the cast for the show with Rhenzy Feliz (Teen Wolf, Casual) as Alex Wilder, Lyrica Okano (The Affair, Unforgettable) as Nico Minoru, Virginia Gardner (Goat, Little Bitches) as Karolina Dean, Ariela Barer (New Girl, One Day at a Time) as Gert Yorkes, Gregg Sulkin (Faking It, Don’t Hang Up, Anti Social) as Chase Stein and Allegra Acosta (100 Things to do Before High School, Just Add Magic) as Molly Hernandez.

Marvel also released the following character descriptions for the Runaways characters:

“Alex Wilder: a loud-and-proud nerd. Admittedly a bit of a loner, Alex spends much of his free-time playing video games, but deep down, what he wants most is to reunite his childhood group of friends.

Nico Minoru: tough, intelligent, and independent–embodies teenage angst. A budding “Wiccan,” Nico’s carefully crafted goth appearance isolates her from her peers and family, but maybe what she really needs is someone to talk to.

Karolina Dean: model-perfect exterior with a lot going on behind her professionally whitened smile, is burdened by the lofty expectations and responsibilities put upon her by her parents. Underneath her veneer of privilege and perfection, Karolina is experiencing a newfound eagerness to explore her identity and pursue her own desires.

Gert Yorkes: a purple-haired, bespectacled, contemporary riot grrrl. Never passing up a moment to stand on a soapbox, Gert sometimes wields her persona as a brash social justice warrior to mask her true feelings.

Chase Stein: a lacrosse-playing, high school heartthrob. While many write him off as a dumb jock, Chase exhibits flashes of untapped brilliance in engineering, not unlike his wildly successful father’s.

Molly Hernandez: the youngest and most innocent member of her friend group, is known for her peppy positivity and a deep yearning to belong.”

In a statement from Marvel TV President Jeph Loeb, who is also working on the show, he expressed his excitement for this group of actors.

“The fun and chemistry that this group of talented actors create is wonderful and we’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to life.”

The comic co-creator Brian K. Vaughan, who has been revealed to be working on the show as a series executive consultant, added the following.

“I’m so excited for fans of the comic to watch this perfect cast of amazing actors, all of whom embody the spirit of their characters more than I ever could have imagined.”

Executive Producers/Show-runners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who was announced to be leading the show since the initial announcement last year, talked about getting to bring these characters to life.

“We have had a total blast bringing Brian and Adrian’s amazing story to life.  We’re so happy they love the Runaways we’ve assembled as much as we do.”

Official Logline:

“Every teenager thinks their parents are evil. What if you found out they actually were? “Marvel’s Runaways” is the story of six diverse teenagers who can barely stand each other but who must unite against a common foe–their parents.”

Marvel’s Runaways, which is coming to Hulu, is set to start production in February.

Sulkin looks too male model for Chase, but sold otherwise.

  • October_1985

Looks pretty spot on. Now if we can get our Alan Davis’ Clandestine series on Netflix, please?

  • Jeff Grantz

I love The Runaways! One of my favorite comic series. Can’t wait for this show.

Yay!! Another Marvel TV show that will fail on TV.

    • Brian Holland

Oh really? Name the others that have failed.

      • SAMURAI36

        Is this a trick question?

        Oh well, I’ll play along….

        1) Agent Carter = Cancelled

        2) AoShit = Constantly on the chopping block for cancellation

        3) Marvel’s Most Wanted = Failed to even get off the ground

        4) Damage Control = In development h#II

        5) Hulk TV show = Never got off the ground

I won’t even mention shows like Mutant X and that travesty that was the Blade TV show. I’m sure there’s a couple others I’d forgotten.

        Need I say more.

        • AlphaBlu

Could you say less? Your hate-boner for Marvel is pretty well known. Time to put it away.

          • SAMURAI36

Really? We really have to go thru this song and dance again? Really?

When I see you saying this same stuff to the people who have a “hate-boner” for DC stuff in every thread, then you can save your hypocrisy.

          • SAMURAI36.

Wow amazing. The hypocrite calling another person a hypocrite. You’re a piece of work.

        • Brian Holland

Please, no. Mutant X and Blade were not Marvel Studio shows. The Netflix shows are major successes. AOS is still on the air and in its 4th season. Agent Carter did two seasons. Pilots or other shows in development come and go for all sorts of reasons. You comment was typical of an ignorant hater. Go read a book perhaps.

          • SAMURAI36

First off, there is no show that is produced by “Marvel Studios”. I’ll let you figure out why that’s the case.

Second, even if there was, I didn’t reduce my statement to “Marvel Studios”. Nice try moving the goal posts.

Third, Blade and Mutant X were most certainly put out by Marvel ENTERTAINMENT (there’s your hint from #1).

Fourth, Marvel has had trouble getting their stuff on network TV for years.

Fifth, What does Netflix have to do with anything I said?

Sixth, Both AoShit and Carter suffer(ed) from terrible ratings, regardless of how long they stayed on TV. They both have failed to garner the general movie audience, which is a 100+M people. 2-3 million people (even for the Netflix stuff) is hardly a success, for something that’s supposed to be “connected” to a massive movie machine.

Seventh, I’m pretty sure I’ve read more books in a single month, than you’ve read in your entire life.

            Try harder.

          • Brian Holland

            LOL! What @AlphaBlu:disqus said 😉

          • SAMURAI36

That’s your response? I gladly accept your concession.

          • Brian Holland

Not a concession… lost interest xx

          • SAMURAI36

No, you were defeated. You wouldn’t have “lost interest”, had I done a poor job rebutting your statements.

          • Brian Holland

You’re so easily wound up… defeated? This isn’t a video game love, besides you were wrong from the start.

          • SAMURAI36

Thought you “lost interest”? Now you’re trying to rebut? Which is it?

          • Axxell

Even Agents of SHIELD on a bad day still gets better ratings than anything from CW…A show about Captain America’s ex lasted 2 seasons…How long did Constipatine last?

            Thought so…

          • Seb

@Axxell:disqus Flash and Supergirl both outperform AoS

          • Axxell

Even when moving at 10pm, AoS still managed a better season opening rating than the Flash or Supergirl.

          • Seb

Not sure why you put emphasis on just one episode when Flash has a season average of 1.3 share and 3 million viewers, and Supergirl has 0.84 and 2.65 million viewers.
AoS has 0.78 and 2.485 million viewers.

          • Axxell

Take DVR+live views. That’s where the real numbers are.

  • AlphaBlu

Are we going to get a giant raptor character? That could be a little odd.

Still, Karolina is smoking hot and live action Molly will be the best thing since The Avengers.

The Gert character concerns me though.
