Marvel Studios has officially announced that Angela Bassett has joined the cast of Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther as T’Challa’s mother, Ramonda.
Bassett joins a cast that so far includes Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke and Florence Kasumba. Production is set to begin in January under the working title “Motherland.”
Boseman’s titular character made his big screen debut earlier this year in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War. We didn’t meet Bassett’s Ramonda in that movie, but we were introduced to her husband and king of Wakanda, T’Chaka, who died during Zemo’s U.N. bombing in Vienna, which will more than likely be referenced in Black Panther.
