With the highly anticipated Deadpool hitting theaters next year, today we learn that Marvel Entertainment is launching a new Deadpool five-issue comic book series entitled Deadpool and the Mercs for Money. Marvel will look to capitalize on the popularity of the ‘merc with a mouth’, aided in no small part by Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds’ and creator Rob Liefeld’s passion for the character.
Written by Cullen Bunn (Uncanny X-Men), with art by Salva Espin, the series will see a team of mercenaries gathered by Deadpool against what Bunn calls “dozens of the Marvel Universe’s deadliest assassins, cutthroats, and murderers,” hunting for “the most valuable artifact in the universe.” The series will run with the regular ‘Deadpool’ series starting in February (the film premieres February 12th, 2016).
Bunn, in speaking with IGN, refered to the five-issue series as “The Dirty Dozen and The Expendables if Deadpool was in charge instead of Lee Marvin or Sylvester Stallone… It’s Saving Private Ryan if, instead of rescuing a soldier, they were trying to make a metric ton of cash.”
Deadpool is all over the place these days; his regular ‘Deadpool’ series is part of Marvel’s ‘All-New, All-Different’ re-launch, and appears in Uncanny Avengers, Spider-Man/Deadpool, and Deadpool & Cable.
Are you excited for all Deadpool, all the time? If not, he would probably visit you in your home… eat all your food… sleep in your bed… stink up your bathroom… until you get excited. Just do him a favor, would ya? Deadpool’s a little busy right now… or stock up on chimichangas. Your call…
