Capcom, who has had a lasting partnership with Marvel since 1993, is getting ready for yet another crossover video game. We have already had other games such as X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, and the other Marvel vs. Capcom iterations since 1996. Now it looks like they are about to release a new game. Marvel vs. Capcom 4 is currently in development and is expected to be released in 2017.
Capcom hasn’t officially made the announcement just yet, but it is expected to make an announcement this week at their Playstation Experience event. There will also be the 2016 Street Fighter 5 tournament as well.
What makes this game a little different than the other versions, is that it will primarily use Marvel Studios characters. This means that we’ll probably see various characters from Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and other properties of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Those characters on the Fox side (mutants like Wolverine, Magneto, and other X-Men characters) sitting this one out. This is a little bit of a departure as many X-Men characters who have been a part of the crossover video games since 1994.
Capcom’s original license with Marvel expired in 2013, so this potential new game means that a new deal is definitely happening soon. When asked about the upcoming game, Marvel Games vice president Jay Ong was quite cryptic.
“There’s nothing we can say at this time. Let’s just say that we hear that a lot. We love our fans and we certainly want to please them. Beyond that we can’t say anything at this time. But who knows what the future holds?”
Capcom also has no official comment on the possible game coming next year.
