Deadline reports Walton Goggins has joined the cast of Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the upcoming third installment of 20th Century Fox’s Maze Runner franchise based on the young-adult novel series by James Dashner.
The new film once again follows Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) as he sets off on a mission to find the cure to the deadly disease known as “Flare”, a man made disease that turns humans into zombies. Goggins joins the cast in the role of Lawrence who has been described as an unusual and dangerous character who is part-revolutionary, part-anarchist, and a voice for the voiceless people.
The third installment which concludes the trilogy is once again directed by Wes Balls from a script penned by T.S. Nowlin. Producing the project is Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Lee Stollman and Joe Hartwick Jr. for Temple Hill Entertainment and Gotham Group.
The Death Cure was originally slated to release on February 17, 2017, but production on the project halted after the film’s star, O’Brien, suffered multiple injuries including a concussion along with a facial fracture and lacerations after being hit by a car while performing a stunt on set.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and Kaya Scodelario. Here’s the official synopsis from the novel:
It’s the end of the line.
WICKED has taken everything from Thomas: his life, his memories, and now his only friends—the Gladers. But it’s finally over. The trials are complete, after one final test.
Will anyone survive?
What WICKED doesn’t know is that Thomas remembers far more than they think. And it’s enough to prove that he can’t believe a word of what they say.
The truth will be terrifying.
Thomas beat the Maze. He survived the Scorch. He’ll risk anything to save his friends. But the truth might be what ends it all.
The time for lies is over.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure is now set to hit theaters on February 9, 2018.
