In addition to the new details regarding the upcoming X-Men spin-off New Mutants revealed this morning, two actors have emerged as potential additions to the film.
Sources close to the production have told Entertainment Weekly that 13 Reasons Why actor Henry Zaga, the actor who played Tony’s boyfriend on the hit Netflix series, could soon be announced in the role of Sunspot, the mutant with the ability to absorb solar energy and convert it for use as physical strength.
The magazine also states that unconfirmed chatter suggests the Night Nurse herself, Rosario Dawson is in talks to join the project as well.
UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that Dawson is indeed in talks to play the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself. The character will serve as a mentor to the group of fledgling heroes learning to control their powers.
If Dawson takes the role, she will join Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) in the film. Taylor-Joy is set to play Magik with Williams in the role of Wolfsbane. Cannonball and Moonstar will also be included in the film. Unfortunately, James McAvoy will reportedly not be reprising his role as Professor Charles Xavier, nor will Alexandra Shipp as Storm in the horror spin-off of the X-Men franchise.
Production is set to begin this July with The Fault in our Stars director Josh Boone at the helm. Boone has co-written the script with his writing partner Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg and Karen Rosenfelt will produce.
So what do you think? Would Zaga or Dawson be a good fit for New Mutants? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the X-Men franchise as we learn it.
New Mutants is currently slated to hit theaters on April 13, 2018.
