Although the live-action “Resident Evil” film Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is coming to theaters next January, Sony is also going to release another animated film, Resident Evil (Biohazard): Vendetta. This will be the third canonical CGI animation film based on characters created from the Resident Evil franchise. The animated films followed the popular video games story-wise more closely than the live-action films. In the previous films Resident Evil: Degeneration and Resident Evil: Damnation centered on Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Rebecca Chambers, and other characters from the video game.
The film will focus on Kennedy, Chambers, and Chris Redfield as they go on a zombie-infested mansion for a mission. The atmosphere is similar to the inaugural video game where members of the STARS team investigate a mansion and learn about the T-Virus. Check out the trailer.
While we are treated to brief glimpses of the film, but it spears to go back towards the “survival horror” of the franchise, and not the action associated with later video game sequels. The film is due to take place between the events of Resident Evil 6 and the upcoming Resident Evil 7 video games. While the film will be released in Japan, expect streaming rights to be available within the US as well as Blu-Ray releases. The film is written by Makoto Fukami, directed by Takanori Tsujimoto, and produced by Capcom and Marza Animation Planet. The film will be distributed via Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan.
Resident Evil: Vendetta will hit theaters in Japan in spring 2017.
