Marvel Television are getting set for their biggest season ever with the upcoming premieres of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, The Punisher on Netflix, Runaways on Hulu and Cloak and Dagger on Freeform. All of these are dramas, but there is one outlier on the schedule.
New Warriors, a half-hour sitcom starring Derek Theler and Milana Vayntrub, was supposed to air on the younger-audience, Disney-owned network Freeform sometime next year, but that is not happening anymore.
The network could not find time in its busy upcoming schedule to fit the new Marvel comedy, thus sources close to The Hollywood Reporter said that Marvel will begin shopping the series to other networks. Those same sources also claim that the pilot for New Warriors “tested through the roof,” so a new network would not be hard to find, especially when Vayntrub will be playing fan-favourite character Squirrel Girl. Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Entertainment, addressed the news in a recent statement:
We are extremely excited about Marvel’s New Warriors and look forward to finding the perfect partner to launch the series with in 2018.
There is also some discussion among the reporting sources that because of Marvel’s lucrative multi-series deal with Netflix, selling new shows to outside companies is incredibly difficult. Some suggest that the show could premiere on the upcoming Disney streaming service, but that program is projected to begin in 2019, making it an unlikely home for New Warriors. Somewhere like Hulu or even ABC could be the more likely new home for the show, but ABC might be hesitant given the failure of Marvel’s Inhumans.

Created by Kevin Biegel (Enlisted), Marvel’s New Warriors stars Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl, Derek Theler as Mister Immortal, Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Speedball, Matthey Moy as Microbe, Kate Comer as Debrii, and Keith David as Ernest Vigman.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 will premiere on December 1, The Punisher on November 17, and Runaways on November 21.
