Nintendo Bringing Mario To The Big Screen With New Animated Film

Super Mario Odyssey Nintendo

After the glowing success of Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo has now confirmed that the famous plumper will get a second chance at big screen status. Nintendo has surprised fans with a major announcement, that an iconic character will be visiting Hollywood. Mario and Luigi are heading into new territory with the highest profile licensing deal by Hollywood in years.

Illumination Entertainment has already created a billion-dollar series in the Despicable Me franchise and is now joining forces with Nintendo to make an animated Super Mario Bros. movie celebrating the classic video game hero. The deal is going to allow Illumination to make future Mario movies, though only one is currently in development.

Nintendo is hesitant to make trade deals after several terrible third-party video games nearly destroyed them in the 90s. The studio worked on the bad 1993 Super Mario Brothers movie starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper. Only recently has the game studio opened up to possibilities in feature-length films based on favorite characters, with Pokemon being the only exception.

All eyes are on Nintendo too — give our favorite plumber a decent shot at the big screen! Perhaps he can break the video game curse?
