It’s finally official: Obi-Wan Kenobi is getting his own Star Wars spin-off movie.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed the news today along with the reveal that Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) is in talks to direct the standalone film about the Jedi Master. Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars franchise, and perhaps was the best things to come out of the prequels. As a result, fans have been wanting Ewan McGregor to reprise his role for some time, however, McGregor has not yet been confirmed.
According to the trades sources, the project is in the earliest stages of development and does not yet have a script. Should Daldry close a deal, he’ll over see development and writing of the film alongside the Lucasfilm story group.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the launching pad for the beginning of many Star Wars spin-off films. It wowed the critics and did well at the box office. The future anthology films hope to follow suit. The Han Solo movie has its Han in Alden Ehrenreich and recently cast Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, with Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson also on board, among many others.
The Star Wars community has raged for months that we’re getting a movie about Han Solo before one for Obi-Wan. After months of Ewan McGregor stating that he’d be down for an Obi-Wan spin-off, Disney and Lucasfilm have now revealed that an Obi-Wan film will be coming out after Episode IX.
Back in March during an interview, McGregor stated:
“Listen, I have been asked about it a lot, to the point where it looks a bit like I’m sort of touting for work. I’ve been very open to say I’d be happy to do it, if they want to do it.”
When asked directly about a spin-off film focused primarily on his character, McGregor kind of danced around the subject.
“I think they are set going into the 2030s with their movies, but it would be fun to do, of course I’d be happy to do it.”

8 Ways In Which ‘Star Wars’ Can Reach Its Full Potential
The Star Wars Universe is one of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time and the high quality of the recent films are not only proving how strong a franchise it is, but also continuing to gain legions of new fans every year. The series is fantastic and Disney’s films have brought it back in favor with both audiences and fans, but like any good franchise there are always ways in which a series can improve and as a huge fan I don’t think the series is at its full potential yet. There have been some minor issues and things that could be done differently that could make the series even greater than it already is and these can be addressed in future Star Wars films and in other mediums as well. With all of this being said it is appropriate to look at some of these issues and see how they can be addressed in a manner that could give everyone what they will want.
