Last year, it was announced that Freeform had ordered the Marvel show Cloak & Dagger straight to series, which follows the story of Tyrone “Ty” Johnson (Cloak) and Tandy Bowen (Dagger). In November 2016, the show was delayed until 2018 as it was also revealed that Joe Pokaski (Underground) would be serving as the show-runner. But who will be playing the iconic duo?
It was revealed today that Aubrey Joseph (The Night Of) and Olivia Holt (Kickin’ It) have officially been cast as Tyrone and Tandy respectively, with the show getting close to starting production. Gina Prince-Bythewood will be directing the first episode of the series, which is supposedly starting production under the code name Shadows and will begin filming in New Orleans on February 15th.
Pokaski said this in a statement about Holt and Joseph bringing the characters to life for the new series.
“The characters of Tandy and Tyrone have always stood out to me ever since I first met them in the pages of Marvel comics when I was a boy. When Olivia and Aubrey read for the roles, these characters leapt off the page. We’re so excited to see what these talented young actors bring to the Marvel Universe.”
Jeph Loeb, who is the president of Marvel TV as well as an executive producer on this show, shared his excitement about the two actors joining the Marvel Universe.
“Marvel is delighted to have found our “Cloak & Dagger.” Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph encompass the true essence of the characters and we are excited for the audience to see them in these roles.”
Official character descriptions were also released with the casting announcements:
“Dagger: Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life changing event.
Cloak: Young Tyrone Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless. But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes forever.”
Cloak & Dagger is part of a line-up of several upcoming Marvel TV shows that are currently in the works as Hulu has The Runaways. ABC also has The Inhumans, which is set to premiere on September 26. Netflix have their Marvel properties with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher. ABC Studios also has a New Warriors related series in development as a comedy featuring Squirrel Girl.
There is also the mystery Marvel show from John Ridley that he has been working on for ABC for the past few years. While not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, FX has their X-Men related TV series Legion starring Dan Stevens as David Haller. In addition, FOX is working on their untitled X-Men series from Burn Notice producer Matt Nix that recently got a pilot order on the project.
“Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger” is an adaptation of the beloved Marvel characters whose story is aimed squarely at young adults. This live-action interracial romance follows Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart — but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging. “Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger” is a co-production of Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios.
Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is set to premiere sometime in 2018 on Freeform.
