Peter Cullen Says He Will Return As Optimus Prime In ‘Bumblebee’

Transformers: The Last Knight Bumblebee Optimus Prime Transformers actor Peter Cullen — who has been voicing Optimus Prime, the leader of the heroic Autobots, since the original cartoon series — says he will be lending his voice to the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee. Although this is yet to be confirmed by the studio.

During a recent interview with CineMovie, Cullen was asked whether or not we would hear his voice in Bumblebee when the actor confirmed that we would. Optimus Prime has arguably been the face of the Transformers film franchise since it began a decade ago. It makes a certain amount of sense that such a recognisable and iconic aspect of the Transformers mythos would re-emerge in various spin-offs, such as this upcoming Bumblebee film, which will of course centre around the titular Autobot who’s notoriety is only second to Prime’s, in part due to his unique characteristic of only communicating through radio snippets.

Paramount, the studio behind all the Transformer films, released a synopsis on the upcoming Bumblebee, which is currently in production. Judging by it, it seems as is if the Transformer spinoff will be a taking a back-to-basics approach which won a legion of new fans with the simple story of a boy and his first car before largely squandering that goodwill with increasingly convolutedly plotted sequels. If Bumblebee can find the heart in the franchise again, it may win back fans who were becoming more disillusioned with the excess, as evidenced by increasingly diminishing domestic box-office returns. Check out the synopsis below:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.”

Directed by Travis Knight, Bumblebee will star Hailee Steinfeld, Pamela Adlon, John Cena, Kenneth Choi, and Stephen Schneider.

Bumblebee is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 21, 2018.
