The Original Idea For The ‘Avengers’ Team Lineup Was Very Different

Avengers Superhero Stories ThriveWhile Avengers: Infinity War is set to be one of the biggest movies of all time, one wouldn’t be able to tell that if they looked back at the original roster for the Avengers films.

To understand why the original lineup for the Avengers film was so different, one must travel back to a dark time for comic books. The 90s. During this time, Marvel was on the verge of bankruptcy, selling their movie properties to different companies in an attempt to keep their head above the water. However, when seeing how well movies like Spider-Man and X-men did, Marvel decided to take their own shot at the superhero movie phenomenon.

Around 2005, Marvel took out a $525 million loan in an attempt to start up their own film franchises. The idea? To take the scraps of characters they had left and turn them into a franchise. Later that year, Marvel released their slate of ten properties that they wanted to use to get back on top: Captain America, Power Pack, Shang-Chi, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Cloak & Dagger and the Avengers. Doctor Strange was set to fill the role Iron Man has in the MCU today, acting as the cornerstone of the universe and a figurehead for the franchise.

However, after the success of Iron Man in 2008 and the rights to the movie defaulting back to Marvel, plans changed. The rights of Black Widow and Hulk soon followed suit. Now, with a more classic line up, Marvel decided to add in Thor to the roster in an attempt to make it a more classic line up. As more people were added, others were dropped, leading to the Avengers roster we have today.

What do you think? Could this original roster have spawned a franchise as big as the MCU? Or would it have been a flop? Leave your answers in the comments below.
