It’s said when working on a feature film that the cast and crew become family, due to the long hours that are spent on set, day after day. That is certainly true for the cast of Lord of the Rings. They became friends on and off screen.
Orlando Bloom took to Instagram, posting a throwback picture of the cast when they all got matching tattoos.
Bloom, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, and Sean Bean all took part in getting the number nine written in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Elvish Tengwar script. The only member of the group to not take part in the tattoo process was John Rhys-Davies (Gimli). His stunt double got the tattoo instead.
Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings became one of the most successful film franchise in history, grossing over $2.96 billion worldwide. The films made an additional $3 billion from home release and this inspired The Hobbit trilogy to also be released in a three-part trilogy.
This was also one of the first trilogies to be shot in at the same time. Principal photography took over 270 days and ran from October 1999 to December 2000.
