‘Pacific Rim 2’ Begins Filming; Title Confirmed

Pacific Rim 2

It hasn’t been an easy road for Pacific Rim 2, but the follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s beloved 2013 science-fiction monster film has finally kicked off production in Australia.

John Boyega took to Instagram this morning to announce that cameras have started rolling on the sequel, which will be officially titled Pacific Rim: Maelstrom (as seen in the photo). This title has been rumored for quite some time, but it was never officially confirmed until now.

You can check out the post below along with a photo from the film’s director.

Directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Marvel’s Daredevil, Spartacus), the film also stars Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Adria Arjona, Mackenyu Maeda, Jing Tian and Levi Meaden. As previously reported, most of the sequel will be shot in Australia, but additional photography will also take place in China.

Plot details are being kept under lock and key, but we do know that Boyega will be playing the son of Stacker Pentecost (played by Idris Elba), who sacrificed his life in the first movie to close the Breach, the portal between Earth and the world of the Kaiju.

Pacific Rim: Maelstrom opens in theaters on February 23, 2018.
