The cast of Pacific Rim: Maelstrom continues to grow with the addition of Chinese action star Zhang Jin (Ip Man 3, The Grandmaster). Variety broke the news that the actor has joined the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 science-fiction monster film, but the trade didn’t provide any details on his role.
Dr. Jack Gao, an executive at Beijing Wanda Cultural Industry Group (owner of Legendary Entertainment), said the following in a statement:
“We are very excited that we have such amazing Chinese talent joining us on ‘Pacific Rim’ our new story has a strong connection to China and this great Chinese cast will help us bring it to life.”
Jin joins a cast that so far includes John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Levi Meaden, Adria Arjona, Rahart Adams, Karan Brar, Zhang Jin, Shyrley Rodriguez, Wesley Wong, Lily Ji, Chen Zitong and Lan Yingying. The project is currently filming in Australia, but a portion of the film will also be shot in China.
The sequel is being directed by Steven S. DeKnight, who’s best known for his work on Marvel’s Daredevil and Starz’s Spartacus. Plot details are being kept under lock and key, but we know that Boyega will be playing the son of Marshal Stacker Pentecost (played by Idris Elba), who sacrificed himself in the first installment.
Pacific Rim: Maelstrom opens in theaters on February 23, 2018.
