Paul Bettany Talks About ‘The Vision’ And Working With The Russo Bros. On ‘Captain America: Civil War’!

While promoting his directorial debut with Collider, Paul Bettany spoke at length about reprising his role as the Vision from Avengers: Age of Ultron in the highly anticipated Captain America: Civil War.  Bettany, who until Ultron only provided voice work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Iron Man’s AI, ‘JARVIS’, says the script for Civil War is “fantastic.”

“It’s going to be a lot of fun. I think it’s really interesting, the way that a huge, epic superhero extravaganza is discussing a really interesting question, which is about people unilaterally going into other people’s countries and their intervention there. It’s actually an interesting thing to talk about in a massive forum like that.”

The leaked promotional artwork (seen above) for Civil War showed Vision lining up with Iron Man’s team.  However, it seems the character will delve into the changing dynamics of allegiances, loyalty, and the role logic plays in all of this.

“What I love about my character is that there are so many places for him to go. I think he’s very interested in what it means to be human and what love is. The only way one can guarantee one’s loyalty is love. Loyalty is beyond logic, really. Logic doesn’t really provide for loyalty. If your logic changes suddenly and things not make sense, you can alter your allegiance, but love stops you from being able to do that.”

Bettany then discussed the differences between working with brothers Joe & Anthony Russo, who are directing Civil War versus Avengers: Age of Ultron’s director Joss Whedon.

“I loved working with all three of them. The really great thing with a cast that big is that you have two directors. You can always get one of them to have a chat with about what’s coming up next, and that’s great. I’m really excited to see what they do with what we shot.”

Bettany also talked about the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I think fans feel that [the movies are] in safe hands, and the reason they feel like they’re in safe hands is because the films are being made by fans and they remember what it is about these stories that connected with them, in the first place. That’s why they have heart.”

The Vision, and his use in Avengers: Age of Ultron was one of the highlights of that film for me.  I can’t wait to see what Civil War has in store for us regarding the Vision.  What do you think of Bettany’s comments?

Directed by Joe & Anthony Russo, and featuring a massive cast starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, William Hurt, and Martin Freeman, Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6th, 2016.

So, who’s side are you on?
