10. Denis Villeneuve
In the past five years, Denis Villeneuve has become one of the hottest filmmakers working today. He wowed critics with Prisoners in 2013 and has been generating buzz ever since. His 2015 crime-thriller Sicario was a surprise hit and in 2016 Arrival became a hit with audiences and critics. Then this last year he did what most people thought was impossible: a sequel to Blade Runner that actually lived up to the legendary status of the original film. That alone makes him a worthy director for a Star Wars property.
Now there are some factors working against him. Blade Runner 2049 was a box office bomb so one has to wonder if Disney would want to hand him Star Wars. Yet the film’s critical response might be enough to save him and the fact that Star Wars is a much wider appealing brand than Blade Runner is makes him immune when it comes to that. The other big factor hanging over him right now is his commitment to remaking Dune. Yet fans can still dream of getting this new powerhouse at the helm of a Star Wars film.
