Rian Johnson may be taking over directorial duties on the next Star Wars film, but that doesn’t mean The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams is being completely left out of the loop. He has a sense of where the trilogy is going, including a few things we have yet to learn about one of its main characters. In other words, he knows who Rey’s parents are. During the Television Critics Association’s press tour, Abrams talked a bit about this, as well as about his general excitement for Star Wars Episode VIII.
“I know quite a bit. Obviously it’s not for me to talk about in this moment because this is Rian’s story to continue now. The last thing I’m going to do is reveal something that he would be upset about. I want to make sure that Rian gets the courtesy that he showed me.”
There appears to be an implication here that Rey’s parentage will be discovered in the next Star Wars film. Rian Johnson is not directing Episode IX (that honor is going to Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow), although Johnson will be penning the script. This is certainly not a definite confirmation, but Abrams sounds rather confident that Johnson’s upcoming film will be the one to finally answer our questions regarding Rey’s lineage.
Regardless of whether or not Rey’s parents will be revealed, Abrams is quite excited for the upcoming film. He spoke a bit about his love for the cast and crew, as well as his relief that he was able to put his own mark on the franchise.
“My enthusiasm for Episode VIII is enormous! I’m very much excited for and very jealous of anyone, especially Rian, who gets to work so closely with this extraordinary cast and crew, truly an amazing group. In that regard for sure, but I’m also relieved to have gotten a chance to do a Star Wars movie.”
So, what do you think? Will Episode VIII reveal Rey’s lineage, or will we be waiting until the end of the trilogy to find out just where her Force-sensitivity comes from? After Anakin, it’s technically been established that Force-users don’t have to have Force-sensitive parents, so her lineage may not be as obvious as some have chosen to believe.
