Rhys Ifans Comments On ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’; Believes The Franchise Needs ‘A Kick Up The Arse’

While a majority were pleased with how the first entry in The Amazing Spider-Man series turned out, it seems that Rhys Ifans, who portrayed Dr. Curt Connors in the film, wasn’t exactly a fan of the result. While speaking with Total Film, the Welsh actor had some comments to make about his appearance in the film and how he felt the reboot of the film franchise didn’t quite meet his expectations. The actor also revealed his thoughts about the upcoming Marvel Studios & Sony Pictures reboot of the franchise. In regards to The Amazing Spider-Man, the actor stated that “Anthropologically, it was fascinating. If I was an anthropologist, it would have been very valuable” but as “an actor, it was a lesson.”

Ifans revealed that he was not into comics prior to landing the role, but that he was familiar with the Spider-villain.  He then went on to express his disappointment with the film and how it wasn’t what he was expecting it to be when he inititally signed on.

As I got into it, I remember looking into The Lizard and there was one of the comics where Dr. Curt Connors goes home, and he’s messing about with his Lizard-ness. He takes his work home with him, and he eats his kids. remember thinking at the time, ‘That’s the film I want to be in.’ Not necessarily Dr. Curt Connors eating his kids, but in terms of exploration, in terms of what this film could be about, that was the film. And of course, it could never be that. Whatever you’re told and promised at the beginning of something, when it comes to franchises like that, it’s never ever going to be what ends up on screen.

As far as the upcoming reboot of the franchise? Well, the Welsh actor revealed that he has “absolutely no opinion on it” but that he hopes that “when they reboot, there will be more emphasis on the ‘boot’ than the ‘re’, because it needs a kick up the arse.” Doesn’t sound like he was too fond of his experience, eh? Let us know what you think of Ifans’ comments below.
