Deadline reports Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson could be returning to helm another installment in the franchise set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
According to insiders close to the production, Johnson returning to direct Star Wars: Episode IX is a possibility at the moment however no deals have yet been made. The news of Colin Trevorrow’s exit from the project as director came earlier this evening when Lucasfilm made the announcement officially, revealing that Trevorrow’s vision for the ninth chapter of the Skywalker Saga no longer aligned with their own.
While the director shakeup could cause a delay in the production — which is currently targeting a January 2018 start for principal photography — Johnson’s return to direct Episode IX may fall in line with what the franchise had originally planned. When Johnson was first announced to direct Episode VIII, the original intention was reportedly for him to both write and direct the second and third films in the sequel trilogy, however, it later came to be that Johnson would only write and direct The Last Jedi but would craft a treatment for the closing episode of the trilogy. Only that didn’t end up being the case as Johnson himself confirmed in April that the most recent draft at the time was not based on a treatment delivered by the Episode IX director. That draft had instead been developed by Trevorrow and his Jurassic World writing partner Colin Trevorrow.
Trevorrow’s exit was reportedly over his relationship with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy becoming impossible to manage. The first sign of trouble on Episode IX came a little over a month after Kennedy had fired Christopher Miller and Phil Lord off of the Han Solo spinoff as it was revealed that screenwriter Jack Thorne had been brought on to write a new draft for Episode IX. The latest report from the trade also bolsters the possibility that Lord and Miller could be returning to direct The Flash at Warner Bros.
Star Wars: Episode IX is slated for release on May 24, 2019. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the Star Wars franchise as we learn it.
