Acting in your first major motion picture is a big deal for any young actor, but imagine if your first project was a Star Wars film, the first Star Wars film in almost a decade no less. This was the case for Daisy Ridley when she was cast in the lead role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
During a recent interview with Vogue, Ridley revealed the advice given to her by J.J. Abrams when she was first cast in the role of Rey. According to the actress, Abrams stated:
“This is not a role in a movie. This is a religion for people.”
The director went on to advise her to “Understand the scale… It changes things on a level that is inconceivable.” The actress said she then nodded enthusiastically in response, to which Abrams told her, “You don’t know what you’re getting into.”
Abrams was looking for an unknown when casting the role of Rey. In hindsight, it definitely looks like he made the right call in hiring Ridley, as she is already set to become a huge star, and not only in the Star Wars universe, as she has significant roles in several upcoming films, including Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express alongside Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Dame Judi Dench, as well as Doug Liman’s Chaos Walking alongside Tom Holland and Mads Mikkelsen.
The next chapter in the Star Wars saga will be Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the film stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Domhnall Gleeson as General Armitage Hux, Benicio Del Toro as “DJ,” Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO and Jimmy Vee as R2-D2.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15, 2017.
