Riz Ahmed Applauds Ed Skrein’s Decision To Exit ‘Hellboy’ Reboot

Riz Ahmed Hellboy
Last month, actor Ed Skrein exited the Hellboy reboot in response to the backlash over the whitewashing of the role, Major Ben Daimio, an Asian character in the comics. Now, Emmy award-winning actor Riz Ahmed has commented on Skrein’s decision to leave the project.

The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star commended Skrein for his decision to exit the Hellboy reboot and explained why his choice is an important step towards raising awareness about the importance of telling diverse stories:

“Something that happened recently that I found really, really moving and I really applaud is the British actor Ed Skrein recently, kind of, turned down a role that was a lucrative role. I know him personally, he’s a great guy and he just felt that he wanted to respect the cultural [ethnicity] of that paticular story and that character in Hellboy. So, I think when you see examples of that what you’re seeing is just more awareness around this conversation and I think awarenes is the first step towards change.”

Lost and Hawaii Five-0 star Daniel Dae Kim has since been cast in the role.

Plots details on Hellboy are currently unknown, though the film will center on the demonic hero who became the world’s greatest paranormal investigator while combating occult threats for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

Directed by Neil Marshall, the Hellboy reboot also stars David Harbour, Ian McShane, Milla Jovovich, Penelope Mitchell, and Sasha Lane.

Hellboy currently has no release date.
