The Pokemon GO craze may have slowed down, but the recently announced film is still moving forward. Rob Letterman (Goosebumps, Monsters vs. Aliens) has signed on to direct Legendary’s live-action Pokemon film Detective Pikachu, which is reportedly being fast-tracked for a production start in 2017.
The project is being written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of The Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls), but we know next to nothing about its plot. It will be based on Detective Pikachu, who’s a relatively new character in the Pokemon world, meaning that we should probably expect an original story and some new characters.
Universal Pictures will be distributing this film in regions outside of Japan, where long-time Pokemon film collaborator Toho will handle distribution duties.
Detective Pikachu doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’ll keep you updated.
